Dishonored is an immersive and visually stunning steampunk and stealth game that puts you in the shoes of Corvo, the ex-bodyguard of the Empress in the city of Dunwall. Falsely accused of her murder, you must go into hiding and become an assassin in order to expose your accusers. Luckily, Corvo has been bestowed with supernatural powers by a mysterious force known as 'The Outsider'.
The city of Dunwall in Dishonored is a captivating blend of British Victorian and steampunk styles, featuring classic architecture intertwined with retro-futuristic machinery reminiscent of Jules Verne's works. The game's design is truly remarkable, creating an intriguing atmosphere where Dunwall is ruled with cruelty, with the poor segregated and oppressed by violent steampunk man-machines.
Playing Dishonored may take some time to get used to, as Corvo's powers add complexity to the controls. However, once you become familiar with them, they offer a great deal of enjoyment and allow for creative gameplay. You can manipulate time, possess people or animals, see through walls, and teleport short distances. Combined with traditional weapons, this arsenal provides you with endless possibilities to approach each situation creatively.
The level design in Dishonored is both ingenious and beautiful, particularly in the earlier levels. While the game is not entirely open-world, each level is expansive, offering numerous things to see and places to explore. Finding stealthy routes to your targets is incredibly satisfying and can become incredibly tense as you patiently wait for the perfect moment to silently slip behind a guard undetected.
Similar to Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Dishonored encourages you to play the way you want. Whether you prefer a stealthy approach or a more violent one, the choice is yours. However, be aware that the more violent you are, the more chaos you create, resulting in an even darker atmosphere with increased rat infestations and heightened guard presence. If you possess enough intelligence and skill, it may even be possible to complete Dishonored without killing anyone.
Visually, Dishonored boasts a unique and stylized graphics style that may not appeal to everyone. Characters have exaggerated features, emphasizing their villainous or heroic qualities. While there is a fair amount of blood, it is presented in a cartoonish manner. The true star of the game is the city of Dunwall itself, filled with intricate details that enrich the overall story. It is a complex and multi-layered environment consisting of streets, ledges, tunnels, and buildings, inviting players to explore and become intimately acquainted with its every nook and cranny.
The length of Dishonored's campaign largely depends on your playstyle. While it is possible to rush through the game, doing so would miss the point entirely. The true enjoyment of Dishonored comes from taking your time, utilizing all the tools at your disposal, and fully immersing yourself in the richly crafted world.
With its multiple endings and various ways to play, Dishonored is a game that can be replayed multiple times, offering a fresh and engaging experience with each playthrough. In a sea of sequels, Dishonored stands out as a brand new title that is sure to captivate players seeking a unique and immersive gaming experience.
